How Did SMSCL Help?
Client: Massy Wood Group
The primary bund wall surrounding the Tank Farm had failed in two locations due to an instability issue on its sloped external face. In order to restore stability to the bund wall at these locations a retaining wall was to be constructed and the bund restored. SMSCL was successfully chosen to be the contractor the restore the bund. Due to the bund being compromised, SMSCL installed a special material known as Geo-synthetic Cementitious Composite Mats (GCCM) on the existing bund. The GCCM is a flexible, concrete fabric that hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable, water proof and fire resistant concrete layer. Upon placement and the material dampened with water, the material conformed to the shape of the bund. The soil had to be replaced, and based on technical advice from SMSCL, a specific type of soil was used to ensure stability. SMSCL fabricated and installed a stairway across the bund and a road was constructed on the North and South ends. SMSCL engineers provided advice and support regarding Value Engineering Methods; this led to cost reduction completing the job ahead of the schedule without compromising safety and quality.
