How Did SMSCL Help?
Painting of GT 11 and GT 12 Main and Auxiliary Transformers
Client: TGU La Brea Power Plant
The TGU La Brea Power Plant is a 6x2 combined cycle power plant located in the Union Industrial Estate Area, a prominent industrial zone in southwestern Trinidad. The primary design objective of the plant is to provide reliable power to the Trinidad & Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC).
The facility comprises:
Six Combustion Turbine Generators:
- GT 11–13 and GT 21–23, operating on natural gas fuel and utilizing General Electric PG7121(EA) combustion turbines.
- Six Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs):HRSG 11–13 and HRSG 21–23, equipped with supplementary duct firing.
Two Steam Turbine Generators:
- ST 10 and ST 20, which are GE SC5 non-reheat, condensing steam turbines. These turbines exhaust to individual air-cooled condensers(ACC) to condense steam without requiring cooling water.
High-Pressure and Low-Pressure Feedwater Systems:
- Collecting condensed steam from the ACCs and feeding it back into the HRSGs. The plant’s advanced design ensures efficient operation while meeting the demands of Trinidad and Tobago's power grid.
1. Shop Works
SMSCL was contracted to carry out the painting of the main and auxiliary transformers during the planned outage of GT 11 and GT 22. This scope includes detailed surface preparation and painting tasks to enhance the integrity and appearance of critical plant equipment.
1. Transformer Painting
Painting of the Main and Auxiliary Transformers for GT 11 and GT 12 during the scheduled outage.
- Comprehensive washing of transformer surfaces using a detergent solution to remove dust, grease, and contaminants, ensuring proper adhesion of the paint.
2. Associated Piping Painting
- Painting of all deluge piping and firewater piping located south of the blast wall and east of the transformers. This included thorough surface preparation to ensure durability and uniformity of the coating system.
Execution Strategy SMSCL’s detailed execution strategy included:
- Use of high-quality detergents for washing and surface cleaning to eliminate all contaminants.
- Application of specialized industrial-grade paints designed to withstand the harsh operational environment of the power plant.
- Coordination with plant operations to ensure all tasks were completed within the designated outage periods without impacting overall plant functionality.
